Significant Professional or Academic Accomplishments:
Melissa Colon graduated with a B.S. in biological sciences
from SUNY Old Westbury in May 2007, and is currently in her
clinical and final year, of veterinary school at Tufts Cummings
School of Veterinary Medicine. At the end of her senior year,
she was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award from the
Polytechnic Sigma Xi Chapter. After graduation, she completed
three years at Ross University and plans to undertake an additional
one year internship upon completion of the clinical year focusing
on small animal general medicine and exotics.
During her veterinarian education, Melissa participated
in a volunteer program (VIDA) in Nicaragua and Honduras. She
says that it was a great experience because she was able to
teach people about animal care and to provide free medical
attention and castration for their pets.
“Not only did I help animals that I set out to assist”,
she says, “but I also learned a great deal from my interactions
with people.”
