Significant Professional or Academic Accomplishments:
Michael’s dreams to one day become a Medical Doctor
lead him to academic success. While enrolled at SUNY College
at Old Westbury, Michael Osnard worked as STEP Mentor helping
out with the chemistry workshops for local high school students,
a French Tutor in the Modern Languages Department, and a Pharmacy
Technician. He also participated in research under the supervision
of Dr. Rita Colon Urban. Michael presented his research on
Carbapenem hydrolyzing (KPC) and CTX-M beta lactamases in
the 2011 CSTEP Statewide Student Conference and the 2011 SUNY
Old Westbury Arts and Sciences Research Day. At the end of
the academic year of 2011, Michael earned a certificate of
recognition for excellence in Research from the Polytechnic/Sigma
Xi Scientific Research Society, Old Westbury Chapter and was
recognized as one of CSTEP’s outstanding students of
the year.
During his last year in the CSTEP Program at SUNY College
at Old Westbury, Michael participated in the Mentoring in
Medicine, Inc (MIM,Inc.) Medical Pathway Program. He soon
became a Community Health Ambassador for the MIM, Inc., New
York Chapter. MIM, Inc. gave Michael the clinical exposure
that he needed, and allowed him to work in the Emergency Department
at Montefiore Medical Center.
On his pathway to becoming a medical doctor, Michael applied
to graduate school at Stony Brook University to obtain his
Masters of Science in Physiology and Biophysics. While attending
graduate school at Stony Brook, Michael joined the NSF AGEP
Program and participated in research in the Department of
Physiology and Biophysics focusing on Cellular Delivery Systems
via gap junctions.
Michael is currently a member of the Student National Medical
Association, University of Pittsburgh Chapter and participates
in research at the University of Pittsburgh in the department
of Medicine, Division of Cardiology. He is expected to graduate
in 2016 with his Medical Doctorate. Michael’s advice
to current STEP and CSTEP students is to explore career options
as early as possible, find a mentor, get involved, and network.
