CSTEP Scholars presented Summer Research projects at the 20th
Annual McNair Scholars Research Conference
University of Maryland, Baltimore
County, September 21-22, 2012
This September, two more College at Brockport CSTEP scholars,
Hugo Avalos (BIO) and Myriam Louis (HLS), presented their
2012 Summer Research projects at the 20th Annual McNair Scholars
Research Conference at the University of Maryland, Baltimore
County.
Avalos’ presentation involved determining what factors,
if any, impede adequate quality of health care for Hispanics.
It included a survey questionnaire distributed to approximately
120 participants from two distinct social venues to collect
a range of responses. Louis’ presentation focused on
predictors of, and barriers to, success for future nursing
students through an extensive literature review that also
aimed to understand the process that individuals go through
to become a nurse.
The theme of the conference was “Providing a Path to
the PhD for 20 Years and Counting.” In addition to presenting
their projects, the scholars attended a Graduate Schools Fair
and networked with scholars from Trinity University, Virginia
Polytechnic Institute, and many other prestigious universities.
The conference culminated in a banquet with an inspiring keynote
address by Dr. Charles F. Robinson, II, Vice Provost of UMBC
Diversity Affairs.
