Sunday: Student Success Story
Posted August 23, 2012
Tyler
Sunday Jr. is the 17 year old son of Shannon and Tyler, with
sister Sabrina. He is a senior at Massena Central this year
and a very busy one at that. Recently, Tyler was nominated
by one of his teachers Mrs. LaGarry to attend a week long
conference at Columbia University to help build his interests
in the field of medicine and healthcare professions. He was
the only student selected from Massena Central and this opportunity
has been a valuable experience. Tyler is an excellent student
and has been involved in sports, clubs and high school programs.
There were many interesting lectures at the conference called
“Lead America” for the Medical Healthcare Conference,
with high school students from across the US. Tyler had the
opportunity to learn about the most significant and controversial
issues that face present day medical professions and discuss
how these issues can impact future professions. He was also
taken through the process of diagnosing and treating a patient
by physicians and educators.
Each day was a busy one beginning at 7:30 am with about 6-7
hour long workshops throughout the day and a room check at
10:30 nightly. His visits to Mount Sinai Medical Center were
most interesting. When asked which lecture he enjoyed the
most, he replied, “the neuroscientists were very informative
with stories and thought provoking questions.” There
were about 200 participants from all over and they were grouped
into about 20 each. The same group was together throughout
the week so this is where friendships were made. Tyler is
still in touch with some through Facebook.
Tyler enjoys Math and Science the most while at school with
math being his strength. He shared that at the end of the
2012 school year, he was the best in math for his grade. He
enjoys all his teachers and he feels that Massena Central
is a very good school and prepares the students well for college
and university. Tyler is a high achiever and earned himself
many awards and honors. He has been a high honor student for
the previous three years receiving letters and academic achievement
pins. He is also a member of the National French Honor Society
as well as receiving a Presidents Award in French. In May
2012, he was inducted into the National Honor Society along
with many other scholastic awards. The Lead America Medical
and Healthcare Conference is the latest of his accomplishments.
Besides academics, Tyler involves himself with some sports
and school clubs. He plays golf and played football from 2008-2011.
The language clubs that he is involved with are French and
Mohawk. He is also a member of the Potsdam Akwesasne Talent
Search and North Country Science and Technology Entry Program.
Outside of school, he enjoys golfing and hanging out with
his family. It is obvious that his family is very close and
this is so important.
The schools Tyler has shown interest in are Syracuse University,
Albany, and Rochester. Rochester has offered Tyler a generous
scholarship ($7500 per yr.) if he chooses their school. An
award came to Tyler from Bausch and Lomb (Rochester) as an
Honorary Science Award.
Tyler was recently chosen to be on the “Link Crew”
at Massena Central. This program has students assist the incoming
freshman as they start high school. They take a couple of
days to show the new students around the school, schedules
and answer questions they may have. The Link Crew will also
check on the freshman during the school year just to make
sure the grade 9’s are doing alright.
Tyler and his family have really appreciated the assistance
given to him so he could attend the conference at Columbia
U. This opportunity was so valuable and thanks to all of you
who helped.

Sharihowane, I want to personally congratulate you as you
continue your road of success. As your former teacher my heart
swells with pride in you as you’ve grown to a wonderful
young man. I wish all young people could set goals and work
toward them as you have done. Wish you the best!
